About Bafou: The Geography

Bafou is the second biggest chieftaincy in the Western Region of Cameroon
-
149.035 miles square (386 Km2). About 24 Miles long and 7 miles large.

With the population of 120.000 habitants, Bafou has the biggest population density in the West region 116 resident per square miles (300 people / km square)
-
96% of the populations’ income come from agriculture and animal husbandry activities, in the highlands
-
Located in the Western Region of Cameroon in the Menoua Division and Nkongni subdivition
-
One of the biggest chieftaincy in the the Western Region of Cameroon

The Biggest with the largest polulation in the Nkongni subdivition,

386 Km2 or 149.035 milles square

Bafou chieftaincywas was founded in the 16e century by a man named par Tala, a hunter from neighboring village named Baleveng, who beame the 1st chief of de Bafou then named « Menlepeh »

Bafou has since then been enlarged thanks to the expension capacity of successif king

Administrative organization and decision making
-
Bafou is actually a cluster of 25 villages. At the head of this group reigns a king, Victor KANA III who is the 15th ruler in a dynasty that was founded in the 16th century by a Great Hunter named Tala. Tala came from the neighboring village (Baleveng), he was recognized as an auxiliary of the administration by the 1981 Presidential Decree.

At the head of each village there is a supervisor « notable » who work closely and under the supervision of the king.

The villages are grouped into five major sectors that are:
- Ntsingfou,
- Ndzenkop,
- Mbeng,
- Sessa,
- Latsuet.

To make important decisions, the king consults several organs:
- The Council of nine wise (supreme council),
- The board of seven notables (Advisory Council),
- The council of elders,
- King advisers ( Mo’o Fo’o).

Healthcare

The village currently has 10 health care centers :

◦Santé Communautaire de Tsingbeu
◦Centre de Santé integre de Ndoumbouo
◦CMA DE Nzie
◦Centre de Santé Communautaire de Sessa
◦Centre de Santés Intégré de Lepoh
◦CSI de Kekang
◦CSI de Balefèh et environs
◦Lefeh,
◦ and Saint Laurent High School

Community health Centers are created and run by volunteers
-
The most encountered diseases are malaria, high blood pressure, rheumatism, diabetis, gastric ulcers, HIV/STDs, dermatitis, and parasitosis..
-
Equipments, medications and drugs commonly used and needed are microscopes, delivery kits, surgical kits, glucometers, blood pressure monitors analgesics, antibiotics, antifungals, and all essential and first hand drugs and products.

All the centers lack basic medical equipments and drugs including for emmergency treatment

Mortality is therefore very high
-
Lack of income generating activity makes it hard to access to healthcare aven for the basic treatment

EDUCATION

Secondary school ( middle and high schools)
◦12 Secondary “public schools”
◦113 classroom (80 %are built by Parent Association)
◦6794 students
◦ 260 teachers ( 164 are Volunteers recruited by Parents association)
◦It is not unusual to have a class of 60 students

Schools are in very poor conditions and lack basic equipments

Students lack notebooks and other educational accessories

COMPUTER TRAINING
-
None of the school in Bafou has a computer although computer classes are part of the curriculum for the High school diploma
-
Computer is a luxury and many adults including some students have never touched a computer in their entire life
